The South African Maritime Safety Authority have shown their commitment to the South African seafarer by pledging their name and support to the first Seafarer of the Year competition.
Operating as an agency of the National Department of Transport, SAMSA was established in 1998 as a vehicle to champion the country's maritime interests nationally and internationally.
Perhaps central to SAMSA's identity is their role in protecting the maritime environment. Indeed South Africa has been at the forefront of developments in this regard and was one of the first countries to initiate a marine protection contract with a private company.
